Latest snow report

Updated: 5.30pm Friday 28 February 2025

Thanks to fresh snow, conditions in the Alps have largely improved this week, albeit temporarily, especially lower down. Early in the week, the western Alps saw most of the snow, but towards the end of the week it mostly fell further east. Overall, though, snowfall totals this week have been relatively modest, ranging from a few centimetres to around 20-30cm at best.

After a frustrating week of weather for fair-weather skiers, weather conditions are now improving, with some very pleasant skiing on offer in the Alps this weekend. However, we cannot escape the fact that snow depths remain generally way below par for the time of year, especially lower down.

Over the next few days, the weather in the Alps will remain mostly fine, aside from some flurries on Saturday along the spine of the south-western Alps (i.e. Piedmonte).

Across the pond, some of the deepest snow can now be found up top in Mammoth, California…

Austria

New snow has improved conditions across most Austrian ski resorts, albeit very temporarily at lower altitudes.

For the most consistent snow quality, you still need to aim high, with great piste-skiing on offer in both Obergurgl (40/100cm) and Obertauern (100/150cm).

Lower down, natural snow cover is patchy at resort level in Zell am See (50/80cm) but you can still find plenty of good skiing higher up, and even better skiing up on the glacier at nearby Kaprun (30/180cm).

France

New snow has improved conditions in most French ski resorts over the last few days, although snow depths remain very modest at low altitudes. La Clusaz (5/190cm), for example, is a bit patchy at resort level but can offer lots of good piste skiing on the upper half of the mountain.

By contrast, there is good snow cover at all levels in Val d’Isère (105/170cm) and Val Thorens (150/200cm), as there has been all season. Good skiing is also possible in the far south in Isola 2000 (60/90cm), despite its relatively meagre snow depths.

Italy

Most Italian ski resorts have seen some fresh snow over the last few days which has helped freshen things up, albeit only temporarily lower down. The Alta Badia (10/50cm) in the Dolomites has a modest base but picked up 25cm of new snow at altitude yesterday.

Further west, La Thuile also saw some fresh snow earlier in the week and is skiing as well as anywhere with an impressive base of 60/220cm depending on altitude.

Switzerland

There is plenty of good skiing across the Swiss ski resorts right now thanks to fresh snow this week and now increasing amounts of sunshine.

Snow depths in lower resorts remain very modest, but there is still some very enjoyable piste-skiing to be had in the likes of Villars (10/135cm) and Adelboden (5/110cm).

For more snow and more consistent quality, you still need to aim higher though, with excellent conditions right now in both Saas-Fee (60/240cm) and Zermatt (20/150cm).

Rest of Europe

Some snow has improved conditions in the Pyrenees, where there is plenty of good skiing on offer in the higher resorts. France’s Peyragudes has 20/120cm of settled snow, with further flurries forecast over the next few days.

Some Norwegian resorts have also seen new snow, albeit in modest quantities. Geilo (30/70cm), for example, has seen a modest 8cm top-up and is offering good piste conditions, with further snow expected on Monday.

Fresh snow in Scotland has allowed some limited skiing at Cairngorm but, elsewhere, the only Scottish openings are small beginner areas.

USA

After last week’s big snowfalls, the weather has been calmer across most US resorts this week. That said, there has been some fresh snow, especially in the more northern resorts like Montana’s Big Sky (130cm mid-mountain base), which saw around 20cm.

Further south, snow depths are largely healthy in Colorado, with 165cm on the slopes of Copper Mountain, for example, also thanks to last week’s significant snowfalls. The deepest base of all though is now up top in California’s Mammoth, with a very decent 385cm.

Canada

In Canada, Whistler (205cm mid-mountain base depth) has seen another 47cm of snow this week and is in good shape, especially at altitude. Over the next few days, you can expect mostly sunny and relatively mild conditions here, with the odd light flurry mid-week.

Further inland, there has been around 30cm of new snow at altitude in Lake Louise where the upper base is 125cm. Here, too, it will be mostly dry and mild over the next few days with just the odd flurry mid-week.
