Latest snow report

Updated: 8pm Friday 21 March 2025

There has been a lot of sunshine in the Alps over the last few days, with spring conditions dominating, especially lower down. After a chilly start to the week, freezing levels have risen steadily, peaking today at between 2500m and 3000m before they drop away again this weekend.

Snow depths remain significantly below par across most parts of the Alps which, at this time of year, means very patchy or non-existent natural snow cover at lower altitudes. You can still ski back to base in most ski areas but, you roughly need to be above 1300m to 1600m and on north-facing slopes for there to be continuous natural snow cover.

Not surprisingly, snow conditions are rather mixed across the Alps right now, but generally still reasonable at altitude, especially on-piste. New snow will improve conditions in some areas over the next few days, especially in the higher resorts of the south-western Alps, like Isola 2000, Sestriere, Monte Rosa, Cervinia and Zermatt. The northern and eastern Alps will see very little new snow.

Across the pond, Whistler remains a good bet with plenty more snow forecast this weekend…

Austria

Weathertoski was in Lech (60/115cm) this week where there was some great spring piste-skiing on offer, though the snow cover was noticeably thinner lower down compared to “normal” for the time of year in what is statistically one of the snowiest ski resorts in the Alps.

Other good options in Austria right now include Obergurgl (45/60cm) and Ischgl (40/90cm), while the lower resorts of Söll (0/75cm) and Zell am See (0/80cm) are very much in “end of term” mode.

Not much new snow is expected across Austria in the coming days though there is a chance of a brief return to winter towards the end of the month.

France

There is plenty of snow and lots of good skiing at altitude in the French Alps right now, including in La Plagne (120/190cm) and Les 2 Alpes (35/170cm). Further south, there is also good coverage in the likes of Risoul (70/165cm) and Isola 2000 (100/160cm), both of which have had a strong second half of the season.

Lower down, however, natural snow cover is much patchier with heavy snow conditions from quite early in the day in resorts like Les Gets (10/105cm) and Les Carroz (0/80cm).

Some snow is forecast over the next few days which will freshen things up at altitude, especially in the southern Alps.

Italy

There is still plenty of good piste-skiing on offer in Italy though spring conditions have been the order of the day recently in all but the highest areas.

High-altitude Cervinia (70/175cm) offers some of the most consistent snow conditions right now with La Thuile (60/220cm) and Livigno (50/90cm) are two other good bets.

For the freshest snow, however, you could try the Monte Rosa region (50/70cm), which is forecast to see significant snow this weekend.

Switzerland

Just as in other parts of the Alps, snow conditions are quite mixed across the Swiss Alps right now.

For the most consistent snow quality you need to stay high, with resorts such as Zermatt (20/150cm) and Saas-Fee (75/290cm) as good as any. However, even here it has felt quite spring-like low down in recent days.

More generally, natural snow cover is very patchy or non-existent lower down, with an ‘end of season’ feel in resorts like Villars (5/125cm).

Some snow is forecast in places over the next few days, the most significant falls due at altitude in the far south-west (Zermatt, Saas-Fee).

Rest of Europe

Snow depths are good at high altitude in the Pyrenees where there has been plenty of snow during March. Some rain has affected lower areas in recent days though, so the best snow conditions are still at altitude, where resorts like Andorra’s Pas de la Casa (160/200m) have seen fresh snow.

There is still plenty of good skiing available across Scandinavia despite largely underwhelming snow depths, with 35/45cm in both Norway’s Hemsedal and Sweden’s Sälen.

New snow has allowed some limited lift-served skiing in Scotland’s Cairngorm this week, however, with increasingly mild and windy weather forecast this weekend it remains to be seen how long this can continue. No other Scottish ski area can offer any proper skiing for now.

USA

In the US, many Colorado ski resorts have seen significant fresh snow in the last week, with around a foot in Winter Park (200cm upper base) and more snow forecast this weekend.

Utah ski resorts are currently offering some of the best skiing in the US, especially in the Little Cottonwood Canyon area where Alta saw lots of new snow earlier in the week and the mid-mountain base depth is now 440cm.

Canada

In Canada, Whistler (290cm mid-mountain base) has seen another 60cm of snow in the last week, with 17cm in the last 24 hours, making for some great late season snow conditions, especially given that there is more snow in the forecast over the weekend!

Further inland, Lake Louise (163cm upper base) has seen a more modest 27cm of new snow this week but is also in great shape, with isolated flurries and relatively cool temperatures on the menu for this weekend.
