Latest snow report
Updated: 4.45pm Friday 21 March 2025
It’s been a highly complex and changeable week of weather in the Alps, with most places seeing some new snow, albeit in extremely variable amounts. It has also not been especially cold, meaning that lower down at least, any improvements have been or will be mostly temporary.
Overall, the southern Alps have benefited most this week, especially the southern French Alps (e.g. Isola 2000) but more recently the central Italian Alps (e.g. Madesimo) and the Dolomites (e.g. Cortina).
For the northern half of the Alps, things have been a bit more hit and miss, but all areas have seen some precipitation in recent days (mostly with rain lower down) and there have still been some significant falls in places (e.g. Engelberg).
It will turn colder over the weekend with further snow for some areas, mostly in the southern and western Alps. Next week will be much sunnier for most, although still cold to start with but warming up as the week goes on.
Overall then, snow conditions have improved for most of the Alps, particularly at altitude, although snow depths remain below par across the board.
Across the pond, there has been a lot of snow falling in both Canada and the US…
Austria
New snow has improved conditions across many Austrian ski resorts although snow cover remains thin or patchy lower down in resorts like Zell am See (0/80cm).
Some of the best skiing this weekend will be in the far south where snow is expected to fall all day today in Nassfeld (5/125cm).
In the far west, Lech (75/120cm) picked up 15cm last night and is also looking good while further east, ever-reliable Obertauern (80/130cm) remains in “winter mode” for now.
Following the heavy snow falling in the south of Austria today, the forecast is for a few light flurries almost anywhere over the weekend, before sunnier skies start to prevail early next week.
France
Most French ski resorts have seen some fresh snow in recent days but by far the most has fallen in the south, in resorts like Risoul (70/155cm) and Isola 2000 (100/150cm) where conditions are now excellent for the time of year.
Further north, any snowfalls have been a bit more hit and miss. However, conditions are also good in high altitude resorts like Val d’Isère (100/155cm) but more variable in the lower resorts like Megève (15/180cm), where snow depths are extremely modest lower down.
Italy
Most Italian ski resorts have seen new snow this week which has led to improved conditions, especially at altitude.
In the central Italian Alps, Madesimo (100/120cm) is skiing as well as anywhere right now after a particularly heavy snowfall yesterday. Further east, it is snowing in many parts of the Dolomites today, including Cortina (15/50cm) where some fabulous skiing is expected over the next few days.
In the western Italian Alps, snowfall has been a bit more hit and miss, with the heaviest snow falling earlier in the week in the south-west, where Prato Nevoso (70/100cm) is enjoying an excellent second half of the season.
Switzerland
Many Swiss ski resorts have seen fresh snow in recent days, although amounts have varied considerably from region to region.
The southern Swiss Alps have generally done best, with plenty of fresh snow in the lesser-known resort of Bosco Gurin (in Ticino) where settled depths are now 110/130cm depending on altitude.
Zermatt (20/150cm) has also had some useful top-ups and is skiing well although natural cover remains modest lower down.
Further north, snowfalls have been more erratic, but Engelberg (5/145cm) has seen some significant falls and conditions are much improved from the beginning of the week.
Rest of Europe
There has also been fresh snow in the Pyrenees, which has significantly improved conditions in both Spain’s Baqueira Beret (70/90cm) and Andorra’s Soldeu (130/160cm), both of which are experiencing some of their best snow conditions of the season.
There is plenty of good piste-skiing still on offer in Norway too, despite generally below par snow depths and little significant new snow in recent days. Trysil (59/71cm) is fully open and one of the better bets in Scandinavia right now.
Unfortunately, there is no change in Scotland though, with not enough snow for any general snow sports, and only some limited beginner areas using the magic carpets.
USA
Most western US resorts have seen fresh snow in recent days and are skiing well. In Utah, Snowbird has clocked 75cm mid-mountain and now has a settled base approaching 3m. California’s Mammoth has also seen significant snow, with around 70cm up top in the last day alone and some fabulous skiing in prospect this weekend.
Fresh snow is also falling in Colorado’s Vail (170cm mid-mountain base) albeit in more modest quantities.
Canada
As expected, Whistler has seen huge amounts of snow in the last week, with 175cm of fresh mid-mountain where the settled base is now 288cm. Needless to say, conditions are excellent and there is even more snow forecast here this weekend!
Further inland, Lake Louise is also in excellent shape with around 70cm of fresh this week and an upper base of 166cm.
