Latest snow report

Updated: 8pm Friday 21 February 2025

There has been plenty of fine weather across the Alps this week, which will likely have been welcomed by families enjoying half term ski holidays, even if the good weather came at the expense of any fresh snow.

However, the largely pleasant skiing on offer in recent days cannot disguise the fact that snow depths generally remain considerably below average, especially lower down. The exception remains at altitude in the north-western Alps where snow depths in the likes of the 3 Valleys, Paradiski and the Chamonix valley are closer to what you would expect at this time of year.

After a very mild weekend, some new snow is likely across the Alps from Tuesday onwards but there is still a lot of uncertainty as to how much will fall and where will benefit most.

Across the pond, there been lots of snow action with nearly 2m of fresh in Snowbird over the last week!

Austria

Snow conditions in Austria are mixed right now. High resorts like Obergurgl (40/100cm) and Zürs (80/115cm) are still skiing very well despite not having seen any significant snow for some time. However, lower down, snow conditions are more spring-like.

You can still find some decent piste-skiing in Kitzbühel (5/85cm) but the snow quality is much more variable and snow depths in the valleys are meagre.

Towards the middle part of next week, cooler conditions are likely, with some fresh snow.

France

Snow conditions in the French Alps remain rather variable. At high altitude in resorts like Val d’Isère (108/172cm) and Val Thorens (150/200cm) conditions are still very good, even if the sheer volume of skiers this week means that some of the pisted areas are very hard-packed.

Lower down, snow cover is much thinner, with spring-snow conditions at times in the likes of Megève (10/130cm) and La Clusaz (5/190cm).

That said, there is still some decent piste-skiing on offer, with the hope that it will turn cooler with fresh snow next week.

Italy

There is plenty of good piste-skiing on offer across Italian ski resorts even if snow depths remain almost universally below par. The one area where depths are closer to normal is at altitude in the west, where La Thuile (30/200cm) remains as good a bet as anywhere.

Further east, you still find plenty of good piste-skiing in Livigno (65/70cm) and the Alta Badia (10/50cm), with fresh snow expected across most of the Italian Alps towards the middle of next week.

Switzerland

There is plenty of good skiing available across the Swiss ski resorts despite mostly below par snow depths, which is most obvious at lower altitudes.

Low south-facing slopes in Gstaad (10/65cm), for example, are mostly green but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still some good piste-skiing on offer, and some new snow is possible next week.

For more consistent snow quality, however, you need to find areas with plenty of skiing above 2000m such as Zermatt (20/150cm) and Davos (50/105cm).

Rest of Europe

Warm temperatures have rendered snow cover patchy at lower altitudes in the Pyrenees. Higher up there is plenty of good skiing on offer in resorts like Baqueira Beret (70/85cm) and Soldeu (90/120cm), but still with spring conditions at times.

In Scandinavia, a period of cold weather is now giving way to much milder temperatures, even with some rain in the forecast for some resorts, especially in western Norway where conditions will be wet early next week in Voss (85/105cm). Further north, Sweden’s Åre (45/70cm) will also experience some unseasonably mild weather over the next few days, though with less of a threat of rain, and with cooler conditions returning later in the week.

It's bad news for Scotland this week, with mild temperatures, rain and wind combining to make any proper skiing unlikely here for the foreseeable future.

USA

A lot of snow has been falling across the western US in the last week, including in Colorado where Vail has seen around 1.3m of fresh and now has a settled mid-mountain base of more than 2m.

Over in Utah, Snowbird has done even better with around 2m of fresh in the last week leaving it with a settled mid-mountain base approaching 3m.

Canada

Whistler (185cm mid-mountain base) is in the middle of a big storm cycle that will deliver large quantities of snow over the next few days, leaving the slopes in fabulous shape once the weather settles down.

Further inland, Lake Louise (136cm upper base) won’t see nearly as much snow, with just a few flurries over the coming days, but is in pretty good shape, especially on-piste.
