Snow Report: 20 November 2025
Weather to Ski weathertoski.co.uk Detailed snow report for 20 November 2025 covering the Alps, other European ski resorts, and North America (US and Canada), including current snow depths, conditions, and forecasts.
Snow conditions in the Alps have improved significantly since our last report, thanks to the much colder and (at times) snowy air that has been over much of western Europe since .
Before we get too excited, it should be stressed that this wintry spell hasn’t delivered any huge snowfalls yet. However, multiple small or moderate snowfalls are now starting to accumulate, which helped by the cold temperatures and industrial-scale snowmaking is making for very promising early season snow conditions.
There is also more snow to come, both tonight, and again early next week, when we should see the most potent storm of the current cycle yet. All in all, it’s pointing to an excellent start to the 2025-26 ski season, at least in the higher ski resorts that are either already open or set to open over the next week or two.
Lower down, there is also room for optimism, albeit with some caveats. As many readers will be painfully aware, it only takes one major warm spell or some heavy rain to wipe out much of the “early work” unless a serious base has already been laid down.
For this reason, it is certainly not yet guaranteed that we will have a good start to the season right across the Alps. However, given how things stand now in mid/late , we can be pretty happy with the current snow situation in the Alps, especially in the context of recent years.
Across the pond, there has been snow in California with Mammoth opening for the season …
In Austria, Obergurgl (10/30cm) - the first entirely non-glacial ski area – started operations for the 2025-26 ski season today, opening a serious amount of terrain (69km of pistes). Snow conditions here are good, despite the modest snow depths, with a mix of natural and considerable artificial snow.
There are plenty of other options open across Austria, most of them still revolving around glaciers and on a very limited basis, although Sölden (35cm upper base) also has 69km of runs available on a mix of glacial and non-glacial terrain.
Snow is forecast across Austria on and off over the next few days, with snowmaking also running efficiently, including in areas yet to open.
There has not been any lift-served skiing in France yet this season. However, Tignes (80cm upper base) and Val Thorens (50cm upper base) will both open this weekend. Fresh snow, cold temperatures and hopefully sunny skies, will make for some wonderful conditions even if snow depths remain modest for now.
Snow is forecast across the French Alps on and off over the next few days, heaviest early next week, with the weather also conducive to snowmaking.
Only 3 ski areas are open in Italy today but there will be more open at the weekend, including Madonna di Campiglio (open at weekends only) and Passo Tonale.
Cervinia (150cm upper base) is the best bet in Italy for now, though, with around 55km of pistes open shared with Zermatt.
Most Italian ski areas will see some fresh snow over the next few days, heaviest early next week. The weather is also ideal for snowmaking, which is already underway on an industrial scale in many areas, including the Dolomites.
Around half a dozen ski areas are open across Switzerland today, though there will be many more open over the weekend. Most are still only offering very limited skiing, but Zermatt (150cm upper base) now has around 55km open, shared with Cervinia across the border, with some excellent conditions on offer for the time of year.
More snow is expected across many Swiss ski resorts over the coming days, heaviest close to the northern and western foothills today and tomorrow (e.g. Portes du Soleil, Engelberg).
Skiing options in Europe outside of the Alps are still mostly confined to a handful of partially open resorts in Scandinavia, such as Ruka in Finland where around 4km of pistes are open on a 25cm base.
Cairngorm in Scotland will also open tomorrow, following heavy snow, albeit with only one main run.
Seven western US ski resorts have been open this week, all in Colorado and open on a very limited basis only. These include Vail (45cm upper base), which is currently around 3% open.
More resorts are expected to open soon though, including California’s Mammoth which opens today, and where there has been significant new snow.
Skiing options in western Canada remain limited to the Banff/Lake Louise area, where Banff is offering 41km of piste on a 105cm upper base. Some fresh snow is expected here later in the weekend and early next week.
Our next full snow report will be on
