Snowfall is erratic in the Val Gardena, but snow-making is as good as it gets in the Alps, and the pistes are often in great shape even if there isn’t much natural snow around.

With most of its skiing below 2200m, however, slush can be difficult to avoid later in the season.

Where to ski in bad weather:

Ortisei's local slopes are relatively exposed. In bad weather, you might be better off driving 10 minutes up the valley to Selva, which has more thickly wooded pistes.
