1. Hintertux (Where to ski in September)
Opening dates: 365 days per year
Hintertux (in the Austrian Tirol) can usually be relied on to serve up some of the best 'out of season' skiing in the Alps. Not only can you ski here 365 days a year, but the glacier is also steeper and more varied than most, and is a favourite venue for early season training camps.
In September you can normally expect around 18km of pistes to be open, with a top height of 3250m and a vertical drop of 600m.
This year (2023), however, only 2km of pistes are currently open due to the damage caused to the glacier by another excessively hot summer, particularly during the August heatwaves.

5. Kaunertal glacier, Austria

The Kaunertal glacier in Austria's Tirol region is usually able to offer excellent snow conditions throughout May. As it has no resort base as such, it tends to be favoured by race training camps or frequented by day-trippers.
This year (2023) the glacier has around seven runs open, at altitudes of up to 3100m. This number may dwindle as the month progresses.

Top 5 places to ski in the Alps in May: Engelberg (from 2019)
Engelberg is the only resort in Switzerland besides Zermatt to continue to offer skiing for most of May.
Its glacier may be small, offering just a handful of easy runs, but in most years you can also ski on more advanced slopes down to Stand (2428m) and sometimes even to Trübsee (1800m), which should be the case this year (2019).
