Latest snow forecast
Updated: 7pm Friday 22 December 2017
The warming trend in the Alps is set to continue with freezing levels expected to peak on Sunday.
The last of the showers (snow 1000-1500m) will clear the north-eastern Alps early tomorrow then all areas can expect plenty of sunshine this weekend with freezing levels close to or above 3000m.
While this may sound like very bad news, any snow loss will be minimal due to both the increasingly dry air (snow holds up better in dry rather than humid air) and low sun that we have at this time of year. More damage will have been done to the snow in areas that have seen high humidity and rain over the last 48 hours, such as the low resorts of the Tirol and Salzburg.
Christmas Day (25 December) looks like staying sunny and mild, with very pleasant skiing conditions all-round. The weather will then break again on Boxing Day (26 December) with the start of a new storm cycle, which could deliver a lot of snow in places, especially the western Alps...
Detailed snow forecast:
Saturday will see a few early showers (snow 1200m) in the north-eastern Austrian Alps but these will die away. Elsewhere it will be dry with sunny spells.
Sunday and Monday will be mostly sunny above any low level cloud/mist. It will feel much milder, especially at altitude, with freezing levels close to 3000m.
Saturday will be sunny in the French Alps, above any low level mist and fog. It will feel very mild at altitude with freezing levels close to 3000m.
It will remain fine on Sunday and Monday with freezing levels close to or even above 3000m again.
Saturday will be mostly sunny in the Italian Alps, with freezing levels close to 3000m in the west (e.g. Courmayeur) but around 1800m in the east (e.g. Selva).
It will remain fine on Sunday and Monday with freezing levels around 3000m in all parts.
Saturday will be mostly fine in the Swiss Alps, above any low level cloud/mist, with freezing levels around 1800m in the east but close to 3000m in the west.
It will remain fine on Sunday and Monday with freezing levels close to or even above 3000m.
The weather will start to change on Tuesday with snow (and some low level rain) reaching the southern and western Alps.
It will then turn colder with more widespread snow on Wednesday and Thursday, heaviest in the west (i.e. France and western Switzerland).
Our next detailed snow forecast will be on Wednesday 27 December 2017, but see Today in the Alps for daily updates
