Latest snow forecast

Updated: 6.30pm Friday 12 January 2018

The weather in the Alps is going through a quiet spell right now. It won’t last too long though as a succession of Atlantic storms is forecast to arrive next week, especially from Tuesday onwards.

This new storm cycle will bring new snow to many parts of the Alps but with the heaviest snow set to fall in the north and west (roughly north and west of a line drawn between Alpe d’Huez and St Anton).

Indeed, by the end of next weekend, resorts such as Tignes, Flaine, Avoriaz, Zermatt, Verbier, Mürren, Engelberg and St Anton could see between 1.5m and 3m of new snow at altitude, which could again lead to disruption in these areas.

Detailed snow forecast:

Austria

Saturday will be dry in the Austrian Alps, with lots of sunshine above any valley fog and just a few scattered clouds in the east. Freezing levels will be between 1300m and 1800m east to west.

Sunday will see more sunshine in the north and west, but more in the way of cloud in the far south and east with the chance of the odd flurry. Freezing levels will be around 1500m in the far west but much lower further east.
